Roadside Research-the up and down side

Easter weekend we traveled to Vanceboro, North Carolina to visit family.  It is about 20 minutes from New Bern.  Since we were in the area, we decided to do a Roadside research project on our way back.  We picked a sighting report that was about 2 hours away and planned our return trip with the area as a stop point on our route map. It was Smithfield, North Carolina on Cleveland Rd.  That road is off highway 210.  We came in on US highway 70 w.

We stopped and ate lunch at a restaurant mentioned in the original report.  Unfortunately, there is more than one and the one nearest the site of the report was closed because it was Sunday.  We got directions from the owner on how to reach our destination and continued to follow the clues from the report.  Once we arrived at the approximate location, we stopped to look at the scenery.  In eight years, things had changed.  There was now a small housing addition in the vicinity.  Despite this, we think we were able to understand the geographical conditions that must have existed at that time.

We took pictures that will be in the article we write so the reader can visualize what we saw.  It would have been nice to have a more recent event because eight years down the road, there is little to see except the area as it is lain out today.  We are hoping that the original witnesses will come forward to help us clarify what we were seeing.  The young man would now be about 31 and his sister 23.

The location is farming and is just west of the Neuss River.  This would lend itself well to being able to support a Bigfoot, even a family group.  However, as with most sightings, only one was seen.  It was, of course, traveling from one place to another and happened to cross the road.  It was not carrying anything.  And, as the witness said, it seemed unruffled by the car.  It was just set on continuing its walk to where ever it was going.

The downside of Roadside Research is that we are always coming in after the fact, sometimes years and so what we are seeing is after years of change has taken place.  However, it is fun to find the spot and actually see the terrain and investigate the area to see if a population could live there.

The Neuss River empties into the Ocean in New Bern, North Carolina.  According to Wikipedia, “The Neuse River is a river rising in the piedmont of North Carolina and emptying into Pamlico Sound below New Bern. Its total length is approximately 275 miles (443 km),[1] making it the longest river entirely contained in North Carolina. The Trent River joins it at New Bern. Its drainage basin, measuring 5,630 square miles (14,600 km2) in area, also lies entirely inside North Carolina. It is formed by the confluence of the Flat and Eno rivers prior to entering the manmade, artificial Falls Lake reservoir in northern Wake County. Its fall line shoals, known as the Falls of the Neuse, lie submerged under the waters of Falls Lake.”

So, It would be amazing to be able to figure out how Bigfoot arrived in the area in the first place.

So, even though the incident is long past, there is much we can discover by viewing the actual terrain surrounding the sighting.  We just have to remember that the purpose is to gain more knowledge.  It won’t have the excitement of the original incident when it was fresh.  But, it  is a valuable tool to add to the information we already have.

What is a researcher?

I haven’t been writing on a daily basis.  As much as I want to think that I am an endless font of information, I am sitting here without much to say.  This is new for me. Usually there are no pregnant pauses where I am concerned.   Clarissa Pinkola Estes, author of “Women Who Run With the Wolves”, said, “The peaks and the valleys just are.”  In this case I think I have sunk into the valleys.

I was pondering some recent events in the world of Bigfoot research and had to ask myself the question, “What is a researcher?”  Those who are connected to academia would tell you that only a degree would qualify you as a researcher.  The higher up in academia you go, the more pronounced this becomes.   It is a hierarchy that serves a purpose in the world of scientific research connected to universities and professional research groups in general.  It is a way of singling out those whose degrees stipulate that this person is well qualified in his particular field.  It is also a way of distinguishing rank among a certain like-minded members of this academic group.  However in a broader sense, anyone can be a researcher.

While the members of academia use their hierarchy to establish who qualifies for grants and who gets to become involved in the best research projects in their respective university settings, as well as who obtains tenure and who does not, we out here in the trenches provide  valuable data and insight because we don’t have the pressure that those in academia have–publish or parish.  We are able to simply use our passion and dedication in the quest for truth.  We don’t have University boards to answer to.  We don’t have to scratch and grovel to obtain funding for our projects.  We can simply jump in our vehicles and drive out into the countryside and do our thing.  We can actually have fun while following our passion.

There is a lot of competition among Bigfoot enthusiasts and researchers.  To be blunt, there can be a lot of money and power connected with this particular quest.  If one were to actually find and capture a Bigfoot, imagine the notoriety, financial gain and power one could command because of it.  So, where there is money and power, there is greed and jealousy.  There are also a lot of people out there who self proclaim their expertise in this field.  It can be difficult to sift through all the blarney to get at the truth.  I, for one, am not an expert.  I am just a person who has a passion who wants the best outcome despite all the blustering and bellowing that goes on.

Getting back to degrees–all degrees are not equal.  There is a big difference between a degree in biology and one in finance.  There is a big difference between a bachelor of arts degree and a  masters in astronomy.  There is a big difference between a degree in math and one in archeology.  Degrees are like apples and oranges.  Just because one has one does not give them any overt qualifications beyond their specialty.  So, to say that one must have a degree to be a researcher is just wrong!

There have been many men and women who have rose to such levels as to have been presented with honorary degrees because of their personal works within society, not because they completed any specific credits towards a degree.  Likewise there have been many everyday citizens who have contributed immensely to the world simply because they had a passion for something and never stopped learning.  So, just because you don’t have a degree, don’t let others tell you that you are not good enough.  Don’t let them tell you that you have nothing to contribute.  Don’t let others tell you that you have no value.  And never, never let others define you.

What is a researcher?  Anyone who has the passion, curiosity, dedication and basic knowledge to follow their dreams and can think, observe, solve puzzles, express contradictions, find alternative paths, think outside the box, or simply acknowledge their gut instinct that something doesn’t seem right.  If you have these qualifications and are willing to do what it takes to find the truth, you are a researcher.  How you do it is ultimately up to you.

Too Awesome!

I want to set up this story because it is important to the point I will attempt to make at some point in this post.

Last night I was invited out to dinner by my daughter.  She has a friend from college who graduated the same time she did and is also a sociology major.  This intelligent young woman worked her way through college as a waitress at this restaurant and is still working there due to the economic downturn.  So, we went there to visit with her while we ate.

We had a lot of fun.  This young woman is funny and smart and was dumped by her boyfriend for being too awesome.  Yes, he told her she was too awesome and just couldn’t deal with that.  Needless to say we took it and ran with it all night and enjoyed the puns and the jokes that came from her awesomeness.  This overwhelmingly awesome woman is about to embark on a new adventure.  She is going to take Ninja lessons.  She will make an awesome Ninja1  Well, I guess you can guess  where our conversation went.  On her resume she can now put, waitress, too awesome for words, sociology major, and Ninja.  I think I laughed until my side hurt.  When she is waiting tables, first you see her then you don’t and your food will magically appear on your table….  that is the Ninja way…the fun continued.

So, what is the point of this?  As we were getting ready to leave I handed her my Sasquatch Watch business card.  Her face turned pale.  She asked me if this was a joke?  When I told her no, that we investigate these kinds of things, she told me that she had seen a Bigfoot.  Now it was my turn to gape.  It seems that sometime in her past she and two friends were near a creek and saw a Bigfoot.  In fact, she explained, one of her friends had taken a picture.  She didn’t know if she still had it but was going to call her friend and ask.  Then, she invited us to visit during her next vacation, offering us free room while we are there. She said she would take us to the exact spot and then on to a neighboring state where one of the three had relocated so we could interview him.

Now, the idea of a picture laying forgotten out there is almost too much to bear.  I do hope the friend still has the picture!

This woman is as credible as my own daughter.  The look on her face and her immediate reaction said it all.  I believe her when she told me she had seen a Bigfoot.  I can hardly wait to interview her and her friends.  I asked her why she hadn’t reported it?  She said that she had told a couple of friends and gotten such a raft of teasing and tormenting that they decided to just drop it and never mention it again.  You might want to read one of my articles where I summarized a paper written on the subject of Witness Ridicule and how it affects the reporting of sightings.  This fits in well with the research as well as the conclusions by the original author.

A simple night out with friends has turned into quite the potential.  If this photo exists and it is clear enough to identify the creature in it, this could be only the second actual photo of a Bigfoot in existence….second only to the Patterson film.   What a discovery!  However, it may simply be that the picture does not exist anymore.  I hate to think of it but it could be a real possibility.  I hope not but I will still believe this woman.  I do not know the exact details or dates yet, but as soon as I find out and we authenticate the information we will be sharing it.

Unless the witness wants us to, we will not reveal details that may identify them or cause them problems.  However, I will share with all of you what we discover and then decide what to do about it.  We may contact another group in the area and turn over the information so they can investigate it even further, but that is still in the future.  We will deal with that when the time is right.

We are so excited!  The point I am making is, you never know where the reports will come from.  This was such a long shot.  Out of the blue I run across someone who has seen one.  Had I not handed her my card, none of this would have happened.  So, when you leave a tip, leave your card.   When you check out at the grocery or the gas station, leave your card.  Don’t pass an opportunity to hand out your card or share with people.  You just never know where the next sighting will come from.

Out of the Caves

Several days ago I watched a documentary about Neanderthal man.  I was amazed about what I discovered.  We will be publishing it up on our www.sasquatchwatch.info website,  under the heading: “From the Director’s Desk”,  within the next few days.  I have no idea, and neither do the scientists, where the Neanderthal fits into our family tree.  They don’t even know if it is part of our family tree, a branch, or a completely different species.  However,I learned interesting facts that have caused me to ask some questions.  Hopefully, proving the existence of Bigfoot may just answer some of the questions that have risen as a result of the difficult study of these people.

They did not have pottery.  They did not have a formal language, and they didn’t even leave us cave art to decode.  We are a long way from figuring out who these people really were and what happened to them.  Did they die out?  Did Cro magnon man, (humans), kill them off using superior technology and weapons?  Did we humans force them to move to new territories in order to survive?  Did they follow the food sources across the land bridge?  Or, did we assimilate them into our own species?  These are some of the questions that may be answered by proving the existence of Bigfoot.

I urge you to investigate and learn as much as you can about our early beginnings in order to gain new insight into the subject of Bigfoot and possible connections to us as a species.  A good researcher educates themselves.  A good researcher is curious about all things scientific that may have bearing on the subject they are interested in.  A good researcher is driven by knowledge and therefore seeks it out.  Never take anything for granted.  Never assume anything.  Always question.  Always search for the truth, wherever that takes you.  That is what a good researcher does.

Good luck and Good Hunting!

Welcome to the Official Sasquatch Watch Headquarters Blog!

I want you know know that we are the first, the original Official Sasquatch Watch Headquarters.  We created Sasquatch Watch in 1998.  We originally coined the phrase, Sasquatch Watch.  It has been 12 years and boy, has time moved quickly.  Others may say they are Sasquatch Watch, but we are the original–the Real McCoy!

Computer technology has changed rapidly since our simple beginnings.  We were derailed a few years ago while we dealt with Jim’s kidney disease.  During that time we were unable to take advantage of all the new innovations that were invented during this critical time.  However, since the transplant and his full recovery, we are able, (due to our retirement), to dedicate our efforts to proving Bigfoot exists.  We are not ready for our rocking chairs yet!

We are busy converting all our original Bigfoot information from our personal website at cactusventures.com to this new official website.  We discovered that embedding it within our personal site confused people and did not lend it the weight we had hoped.  We have now dedicated this new site entirely to Sasquatchwatch.info.  Let us know how you like the new changes!  We will begin redirecting from cactusventures.com to sasquatchwatch.info soon.

We could not improve our site without adding a blog which will allow you a forum for discussion, a place to report sightings, a way to ask questions, share information and educate yourself about Bigfoot.  We hope you will use the blog to discuss the new project we are starting–Roadside Research.  If you want more information just visit Sasquatchwatch.info where you will find a link to our Roadside Research Projects.  We visualize the new research projects as a way for all of us to get involved.  No one has to settle for being an armchair researcher when you involve yourself in your own research using this method.  It is like a treasure hunt!  It gets you out in the field without all the expense and problems connected with expeditions.  It allows you to see where it happened, hear the sounds, smell the environment and perhaps discover information that may be missing from the original reports.  So, lace up your boots, gas up the car and head out on the road to follow the directions and the clues to the very spot where the sighting occurred.  What a fun way to spend a weekend!

So, here we are with our very first official post.  We hope you enjoy the journey as we share the mystery.  Good luck and good hunting!
